In the history of Japan, a ninja was someone specially trained in a variety of unorthodox arts of war or ‘martial arts’. Their roles may have included sabotage, espionage, scouting and missions designed to destabilise the enemy and cause social chaos. They are not to be confused with ‘samurai’ who were bound by a strict code of honor and were expected to set an example for those below them. |
