For Home Alone, Juan Bolivar wishes to involve the viewer actively by inviting visitors to copy and redraw his own paintings. These will then be shown alongside his work creating an experience that goes beyond the purely formal observation of an artwork.
Juan Bolivar’s paintings deal with the language of abstraction and formalism. They make a direct reference to our familiarity with hard edges and colourfield abstraction, but at the same time, Bolivar reconfigures this stylistic appearance to create a playful figuration, sometimes evident, sometimes hard to recognise, like fantasy visions. The resulting humour acts as a connection, making us evaluate the nature of abstraction and cognition.
In 2007 Bolivar was selected by Matthew Higgs and Marc Camille Chaimowicz for EAST International. He co-curated Eau Sauvage at Lucy Mackintosh and Fieldgate gallery (London), his thirteenth exhibition as curator. His work is part of the UK Government Art Collection, the University of the Arts Collection, and Goldsmiths College.
